Council Meeting held Wednesday, March 11th 1908 at 3.00pm

Attendance.

Present Lady Schwann (Chair), Mrs. Ashwell Cooke, Mrs. J. J. Findlay, Mrs. Bamford Tomlinson, Mrs. O. M. Aldridge (Secretary).

Apologies. Apologies for absence received from Miss Emily Cox, Miss Margaret Ashton, Councillor James Johnston.

Minutes. Minutes of the previous meeting read and passed.

Finance. The financial report for the month was presented by the Treasurer.

French Polishers out-of-work. It was reported that owing to slackness in trade at Messrs. Thornton and Pickard’s Camera Works, Altrincham 60 or 70 women French Polishers were out of employment. This rendered the formation of the Women’s Union impossible for the present. Mrs Aldridge had written to Mr. Purcell General Secretary of the Men’s Society of French Polishers asking him to report cases of other firms needing the labour of women or girls.

Organisation Report. The Organisation Report showed that 15 business meetings of the Unions had been held during the month and visits had been made to girls in their homes. Mrs. Eddie had addressed a meeting at Old Trafford on behalf of the Council. A meeting of corset makers at which Councillor Tom Fox and Mrs. Aldridge spoke was held at the University Settlement, Ancoats.

Girls’ Friendly Society Meeting. Mrs. Aldridge had also addressed a meeting of the Girls' Friendly Society.
